If you have not had the pleasure of walking Prospect Park in Brooklyn and stumbling upon the Boathouse, I highly suggest you clear a day for it in the Spring or Fall and maybe plan a picnic!
About the Origins of the Boathouse
Built in 1905, the Boathouse in Prospect Park was one of the first buildings in New York City to be declared an historic landmark. Home to Brooklyn’s most elegant affairs, the Boathouse offers a breathtaking natural setting and a stately backdrop for your special occasion. This Beaux Arts style building overlooks the scenic Lullwater and Lullwater Bridge, and features exclusive catering from Purslane, the team behind well-loved Brooklyn restaurants Rucola, June and Rhodora. The Boathouse is available spring through fall for daytime and evening rentals, and can accommodate up to 150 guests for a seated dinner and dancing and 225 for a standing event (indoors).
It’s the perfect venue for an intimate New York City wedding with an aesthetic that looks like it could be in the French countryside. It boasts beautiful staircases, stunning tiled details and architectural shapes they do not make these days. When the opportunity was presented to me to do a wedding styled shoot there, I could not pass it up! Even it meant pulling it together in less than two weeks. The good news was, my dear planner friendor, Liz of Elizabeth Hall Events had already done most of the work in reserving the space and assembling vendors – I just need to grab a few vendors and fill in the details. I am truly so proud of what resulted!
The Design
I wanted to do something fun! So much of wedding planning is made out to be stressful and time-consuming. And it definitely can be! But let’s really go all out with the pretty, layered, whimsical, romantic, peach and tulle details. Let’s live a little! I wanted to liven up the space, which is already so light and airy, with color! We need more color in weddings. I love a classic white and green wedding but I also just really like how everything looks elevated in a shade of pink or how even the smallest touches of color change the mood. I could go on about this for awhile, but now for the fun part, the photos!
Hands down, the best decision here, was bringing in a gifted photographer with an eye for the details. Manda Weaver and I had met at a wedding just weeks before this shoot. You could say we hit it off.
Additionally important, the flowers! Whisper and Brook is a powerhouse flower design couple that you don’t find very often! You know a good wedding vendor when you can give them a color palette and free design reign and they deliver!
We had so many amazing vendors contribute to this shoot for which I am so grateful! A full list follows! We had stunning mini cakes at each place setting from Mini Melanie, stationery from East Birch Studios, rentals from BorrowedBlu, Party Rental Limited, and Luxe Event Rentals, a stunning and sweet model, Mai and beauty by Ashley of Alessarro Beauty.
